A display is made up of several components. For example, you can choose between LCD, LED or OLED – displays, which differ in that they are all based on a different technology. However, what is ultimately mounted on the liquid crystals or the LEDs is the display.
Depending on which display type you choose, they are characterized by a differently high resolution or colour intensity. However, the coating of the display also plays a significant role in the final viewing experience. The coating also has an effect on the tilt and shade in which you can see images on the display. A distinction is made between glossy and matte displays.
Display coating – glossy
A glossy display coating is particularly suitable for indoor areas that are not exposed to direct sunlight. A glossy display would therefore be ideal for a hotel lobby or the Home Entertainment – area. Here it can impress with its sharp resolution and deep color saturation. But also in conference rooms, for example, it is ideal for video conferencing thanks to its high resolution.
However, a glossy display is not suitable for light-flooded rooms or even the outdoor area. If sunlight hits the smooth surface of the display, it reflects the light and makes it no longer possible to see the screen. However, this is not the only way to recognize a glossy display. Fingerprints and dirt marks can be recognized much better on the glossy surface than on a matte display.
Display coating – anti-reflective or matt
The matt display is often also known as „anti-glare“. This is due to the fact that it should not reflect incoming light as much as possible. However, opinions also differ on the question of whether the two terms can really be used synonymously; we will do so here. Unlike the glossy display, which reflects the light source and therefore no longer allows you to see what is on the laptop, the matte display refracts the light thanks to its rough surface structure.

It is also less prone to smudges or fingerprints, but does not have the same sharpness and intense color as the glossy display. The resolution and colors are generally still of good quality, just a little more muted. However, anyone expecting perfect visibility even in bright sunlight will not be happy with a matte display either.
