The office of the future: How we will work in the future

What makes an optimal working environment? Companies and their managers have probably been asking themselves this question for decades. It is no coincidence that training courses are held for managers to help them design an efficient and appealing workplace for their employees. The term „modern“ is often used in this context. However, opinions differ as to what constitutes a „modern office.

The coronavirus pandemic in particular has led to enormous changes in the workplace within a short space of time. Home office was introduced where possible and meetings were held via video conferencing. The pandemic has shown many industries that hybrid working is not only possible, but often even beneficial. What does this mean for companies and how can you as an employer succeed in shaping the modern office of the future?

What makes a modern office?

A modern office does not necessarily mean that the latest and most expensive technology has to be available or that there is a fitness room and seating in the staff lounge. Much more than all these things combined, an office of the future needs flexibility, personal responsibility and trust. These points are also realized in the design of the room concepts.

A company rarely has an unlimited number of options when it comes to spatial design. For example, sometimes there can only be one open-plan office because the rental space does not allow for anything else. Or you may not be able to provide your employees with a "think tank" because you simply have too little space available. That is no reason to despair. The aim is to get the best out of the given circumstances and respond to the needs of your company and employees.

In addition to the layout of the rooms and workstations, this also depends on their equipment. The interaction between the individual items is just as important as the furniture itself. For example, the size of the display in relation to the conference room is just as important as the basic choice of display. We will be happy to advise you on this

The office of the future consists of hybrid working

The hybrid working model is a combination of working from home and working in the office. Hybrid means the combination of two different things, in this case working from home and working at the company. Depending on the model, employers allow their employees to work from home three days a week and in the office two days a week, for example.

While some industries were already offering a hybrid working concept before the pandemic, there were also numerous companies that were forced to introduce it. This was undoubtedly well received by employees: almost two thirds of participants in a survey conducted in 2022 were in favor of a hybrid working model.

Implementing this ideally requires some commitment on the part of the employer. In addition to trust and freedom, they must also provide their employees with the necessary technical equipment. To enable hybrid working, employees absolutely need mobile computers equipped with the necessary software.

The possibility of a quick exchange between employees via video conferencing software should be ensured. MS Teams or Zoom, for example, enjoy great popularity. Take a look at our article on Zoom Rooms. Among other things, it presents the benefits of the software, which are ideal for the hybrid working model.

No seat in the office of the future

Depending on the size of a company, the hybrid working model also requires some sacrifices and a great deal of organization. On the one hand, it is necessary to coordinate when the office is occupied. Employees often have to give up their permanent jobs. Due to mobile working, there are often no longer as many workstations in the office that are equipped with the necessary hardware. This means that employees share workstations or sit at a free space depending on availability.

In the office of the future, much of the exchange between employees will take place online. For this reason, all computers must be connected to each other and be able to access a shared platform. We would be happy to advise you on the selection and setup or optimization of your software.

The key point of the office of the future is that there is no longer a "real" office as we know it from the past. The role of the office - in the form of a space in which employees are physically present - no longer exists. Instead, this is replaced by a virtual space.
