What is an LCD display?
LCD technology uses liquid crystals that change their optical properties when an electrical voltage is generated. The crystals themselves do not generate light, but modulate the light that passes through them. LCD screens therefore require a backlight, which in modern LCDs is usually provided by LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes). This type of lighting has revolutionized screens, as it enables higher energy efficiency and better picture quality with low power consumption.
How does LCD work?
LCD screens consist of several layers, including a layer of liquid crystals that are installed between two filters and scatter the light. The layers are designed to direct the light coming through the backlight in a specific direction, creating images on the display.
To display different colors, LCDs use RGB color mixing (red, green and blue), where each pixel consists of three areas, each representing one of these three colors.
Advantages of LCD screens
LCD technology offers numerous advantages that make it one of the most popular display technologies for professional use. They are used in particular in conference rooms for companies and as presentation systems, for example in schools and universities:
- High picture quality: LCD displays offer razor-sharp images with high screen resolution. Thanks to their ability to display high contrasts and vivid colors, they are perfect for presentations, meetings and video conferences.
- Energy efficiency: Compared to other technologies such as plasma or CRT displays, LCDs consume significantly less energy. This makes them particularly attractive for use in large conference rooms or in environments where the displays are operated over longer periods of time.
- Durability: LCD displays are characterized by a long service life. They are resistant to „burn-in“effects. Parts of a screen display such as logos are not visible for longer than desired, as can occur with other display technologies such as plasma.
- Thin and light: LCD displays are thin and light, which makes them particularly space-saving. This is a great advantage when it comes to installing large screens in conference rooms or on walls.
- Cost efficiency: Compared to OLED displays, LCD displays are less expensive, making them an attractive option for companies that need powerful but less expensive display solutions.
Disadvantages of LCD screens
Despite their numerous advantages, there are also some limitations to LCD displays:
- Black levels: LCDs are not able to produce true black, as the backlight always shines through the display. This can lead to lower contrasts, especially in dark shots.</li
- Viewing angle: When viewed from the side, the picture quality can visibly decrease, even if modern systems are installed that are designed to allow wider viewing angles.
- Limited color depth: Although LCDs offer very good color reproduction, they cannot quite keep up with OLED displays, which use individually glowing pixels and produce super-sharp images in 4K, when it comes to very fine color gradations and depths.
LCD displays in conference rooms and for presentations
In conference rooms and for presentations, LCD displays are particularly popular due to their image quality and versatility. The technology is ideal for displaying visual content as they offer high brightness and sharpness - even in difficult lighting conditions.
LCD technology ensures excellent color reproduction and even brightness across the entire screen area. This is particularly important when several participants are looking at the display for long periods of time, as is often the case in large meetings. Another advantage of LCD technology in conference rooms is the good legibility of text and graphics, which is essential for the successful conduct of presentations and meetings.
