Projectors
What you should look out for when choosing a projector
Projectors, as the name suggests, are used to project images and video signals from digital sources such as laptops, tablets and other media devices onto a projection screen in order to display them in an enlarged form.
Depending on requirements and intended use, there are various selection criteria that a projector should fulfill. We have summarized the most important ones for you:
- Room size: Is the projector intended for a small room or do you want to project large images and videos?
- b: Do you have options for darkening the room? The more light you have in a room, the greater the brightness level of the projector needs to be.
- Number of participants: The power level should be adjusted to the number of people in the room. The larger the number of participants, the larger the image and therefore the brightness of the projector must be.
- Intended use: The right projector is needed depending on requirements. Presentations of texts, diagrams and other files require detailed images and correspondingly powerful projectors as well as additional lighting installations, whereas home cinema does not require bright projectors. High-contrast images are more important here.
- Other technology: Should the projector be networked with existing media technology or is additional technology required for the projection, such as integration into sound systems?
The right projector for every situation
Although many projectors often look very similar, the range of technologies is wide. The intended use determines which projector is the most suitable for you. From small presentation projectors for mobile use to permanently installed high-performance projectors for conference rooms and auditoriums to film projectors for home cinemas - we at ComPeri have the right projector for every room situation. The four most important technical features that matter are brightness, contrast, resolution and brightness.
We have put together a selection of the most popular projector technologies for you:
LED projectors
The main advantage of LED projectors is that they use LED light-emitting diodes as light sources and not conventional lamps. This makes them more energy-efficient and durable. The low energy requirement also has the advantage that less cooling is required and the noise of the fan is considerably lower compared to other projectors. LED projectors are ideal for companies and educational institutions such as schools and universities. One disadvantage is the lower luminous intensity compared to other technologies. LED projectors are therefore particularly suitable for rooms that are easy to darken. However, they are not recommended for rooms that are bright enough for daylight.
Laser projectors
Laser projectors are being used more and more frequently in companies and educational institutions. Thanks to the use of semiconductor lasers as a light source, the projectors are particularly long-lasting and energy-efficient. In contrast to LED technology, which is currently still characterized by a comparatively low light output and is therefore not suitable for bright rooms, laser projectors impress with their high light output. This makes laser projectors ideal for rooms that cannot be darkened.
LCD projectors
In LCD technology, the white light is split into the primary colors (red, green, blue) and these are combined by individual screens to form a color image. This creates particularly strong and natural colors in high light conditions. Projectors equipped with LCD technology are therefore particularly well suited as presentation technology and for the projection of images, diagrams and for displaying texts in Full HD quality. The disadvantage of LCD projectors is that the image is composed of individual images in the basic colors. This results in color streaks, the so-called rainbow effect, during fast image movements. This is why LCD projectors are not recommended for home cinemas.
DLP projectors
In contrast to LCD projectors, the light from a DPL projector first passes through a rotating color filter. Only then is the light deflected by millions of small, movable mirrors and finally projected onto the wall through a lens. The advantage of DLP projectors is that the dark and light colors are finely graded by the process. Compared to other technologies, DLP projectors are therefore characterized by an excellent, high contrast ratio of up to 4000:1 – and thus achieve higher contrasts than LCD projectors. This makes the DLP projector ideal for home cinema and all other video formats, as it ensures a particularly sharp resolution. One disadvantage is that a rain effect can also occur here with a fast image sequence.
LCoS projectors
LCoS stands for „Liquid Crystal on silicon“ and combines innovative LCD and DLP technology. As with LCD technology, the light is combined from three color channels. However, the pixels are joined together seamlessly, which means that LcoS technology avoids the weak point of LCD technology. And unlike LCD projectors, LCoS projectors do not produce a raster or fly screen effect or a rainbow effect. The projectors therefore combine the best of both technologies and ensure the highest Full HD resolution, naturally rich colors and high contrasts. This is also reflected in the price.
